Sports massage at home after running or the gym: when to book and what to tell your therapist
Updated October 26, 2026 · 2 min read
After a long run or a heavy leg day, thighs and calves often stay tight into the next morning. This post explains when to book a sports massage at home, how to prepare and what to tell the therapist.

How sports massage differs from a relaxing massage
Sports massage uses deeper pressure and focuses on the muscle groups that work hardest in training: calves, quads, hamstrings, glutes, lower back and shoulders. The therapist combines kneading, pressure and gentle stretching so tight areas can loosen, leaving your legs feeling lighter and making the next session more comfortable.
Massage supports recovery; it doesn't replace sleep, hydration and stretching after training. It isn't for fresh injuries either: if there's swelling, bruising, sharp pain on touch or you can't put weight on the leg, see a doctor before booking a massage.
When to book
The right timing depends on your training:
- The same evening or 24–48 hours after a long run, a heavy leg session or a football match, when muscles are still tired but have cooled down.
- Before a race: choose a lighter session about 2–3 days beforehand and avoid firm pressure right before race day.
- Wait at least 30–60 minutes after training so you can shower, drink water and have a light snack first.
- In running cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, weekend mornings are busy with races and run clubs; schedule a time in the app if you want a session right afterwards.
What to tell the therapist
Add it to the booking note or mention it when the therapist arrives:
- What you just did: how far you ran, a leg or back session, or which sport you played.
- Which areas feel most tired and the pressure you prefer; during the session, say so straight away if it's too strong.
- Old injuries, a recent sprain, varicose veins or blood-thinning medication.
- Your upcoming training or race so the therapist can adjust the pressure.
