Prenatal massage at home: when it's suitable, side-lying position and what to avoid
Updated October 23, 2026 · 2 min read
Aching back, heavy legs, trouble getting comfortable at night: many expectant mothers want gentle care without leaving home. Here's what to know about timing, positioning and what to avoid before you book.

When prenatal massage is suitable
Prenatal massage is usually considered after the first trimester, once the pregnancy is more settled. MiMi offers Prenatal massage from week 14. Every pregnancy is different, though, so check with the doctor following your pregnancy before booking.
If your pregnancy has complications, or you have high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, have had bleeding or have been told to rest, wait for your doctor's approval. This is a relaxing wellness treatment, not a substitute for prenatal care.
Side-lying position and gentle pressure
Throughout the session you lie on your side, with pillows under your bump, between your knees and behind your back, rather than lying face down or flat on your back for long. This keeps you well supported and makes breathing easier.
The therapist uses light pressure and a slow rhythm, focusing on the back, shoulders, neck, arms and legs, and does not press on the belly. If you feel dizzy, short of breath or want to switch sides, say so and the therapist will pause or adjust.
What to avoid and when to postpone
Postpone the massage and contact your doctor if you notice any of the following:
- You are under 14 weeks, or your doctor hasn't given the go-ahead.
- Bleeding, abdominal pain or unusual contractions.
- Sudden swelling of the face, hands or feet; a bad headache or blurred vision.
- A swollen, warm, painful calf on one side.
- Fever or unusual tiredness.
Which MiMi treatment to choose
Prenatal massage comes in 60 minutes (₫400,000) and 90 minutes (₫550,000). Many mothers find 60 minutes is enough, as lying on one side for a long time can get tiring. The price is shown in the app before you book; you pay the therapist directly, with no tip.
MiMi has therapists in many cities and provinces across Vietnam. When booking, note how many weeks pregnant you are, any advice from your doctor and any oils you'd like to avoid, so the therapist can come prepared.
