Aromatherapy oil massage at home: choosing a scent, sensitive skin and how to prepare
Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read
Oil massage is the most familiar choice for a first home massage: medium pressure, slow rhythm and a pleasant scent. This guide helps you pick a scent, look after sensitive skin and get the room ready.

What an aromatherapy oil massage is
An oil massage uses a carrier oil blended with a small amount of essential oil, with long gliding strokes, circular movements and gentle kneading over the back, shoulders, arms and legs. Pressure is medium and the rhythm slow and even, so the body gradually lets go.
It's the easiest treatment to start with if you've never had a massage, and a good choice in the evening before bed.
Choosing a scent for the feeling you want
Therapists may bring different oils. Some common scents:
- Lavender: soft and calming, good for the evening and for better sleep.
- Lemongrass: fresh and light, pleasant after a hot day.
- Peppermint: cool and refreshing; use sparingly on sensitive skin.
- Unscented: plain carrier oil for anyone who dislikes or reacts to fragrance.
Sensitive skin and when to take care
If your skin reacts easily, or you've had a reaction to an essential oil or cosmetic before, note it when booking and choose an unscented oil. You can also ask the therapist to test a little oil on your wrist before starting.
The therapist will avoid scratched, sunburnt or irritated skin. If you're pregnant, choose the Prenatal massage; if you have asthma or are sensitive to smells, an unscented oil is the safer option.
